New 'Batman' names its Joker
Heath Ledger to take on role of criminal mastermind

LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Batman is heading into a sequel, titled "The Dark Knight," and he will face off against the Joker, this time played by Heath Ledger.

Christian Bale, the star of last year's "Batman Begins," will reprise his role as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Christopher Nolan is returning to the directing chair.

Ledger, Oscar-nominated this year for his role in "Brokeback Mountain," resurrects a murderous role memorably played in 1989 by Jack Nicholson in Tim Burton's "Batman."

"Batman Begins" was a critical and commercial hit, and relaunched the Warner Bros. franchise.

An early 2007 start date is being eyed for the sequel. Before then, Bale and Nolan will be in theaters this fall with the Disney release "The Prestige."

yes this is the sequel to Batman Begins, supposed to start filming in early 07', release summer 08'

I like how they are following along with the "Dark Knight" theme from the comics.

Batman was never intended to be a BAM! POW! WHAMMY! type of character. The Dark Knight didn't round up all the criminals and take them Archem Asylum. He killed a lot of them. I am glad to see the studios are going to (hopefully) stick with that. You could see it in the last movie a bit, when Ra's Al Ghul was on the rail car and said "you can't kill me", and Batman said "I don't have to save you either", and that was a pretty key point.

Oh, and in the Dark Knight series, Rachel gets killed and that sets Batman off.

they couldnt find anyone better than the brokeback queer to play joker......... jack made the role great mostly cuz he is half nuts........... ledger wont be half as good as the joker.......... why not mel gibson

I'm definately looking forward to this. Thank god that someone realized just how bad the whole batman franchise got before it was too late. One more movie with neon bad guys or bat suits with nipples and I think it would have been over.

yeah, the first two with Keaton and Burton were badass, but the last two with Kilmer, O'Donnell and Clooney blew donkey dick

I don't know if I can picture it from an acting perspective, but from a physical perspective, I can see Ledger as The Joker. He can pull of the much needed big goofy grin for the role.
