Use an old cellphone? Upgrade or pay more, says Cingular
Biggest U.S. wireless service says $4.99-a-month fee would apply to about 4.7 million subscribers with TDMA and analog cellphones.
July 31 2006: 7:43 PM EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Cingular Wireless, a venture of AT&T (Charts) and BellSouth (Charts) said Monday it would start charging customers with older phones an extra $4.99 monthly fee as early as September unless they upgrade their phones as it moves toward using a single network technology.

The biggest U.S. wireless service, said the fee would apply to about 4.7 million subscribers, or about 8 percent, of its 57.3 million customer base unless these users upgrade their phones.

It is part of Cingular's plan to phase out phones based on older TDMA and analog technology, the technical standard for the first cellphones produced more than 20 years ago.

Cingular has been working for years to phase out these technologies in favor of GSM (Global System of Mobile Communications), a newer technology that is the world's most popular wireless standard.

Cingular, which hopes to create savings by converging to a single network, said last month on a conference call that it would risk an increase in customer cancellations for the rest of the year as it works to eliminate the older technology.

Customer discounts on new phones will depend on issues such as how long they have been customers at Cingular.

"Some customers will qualify for discounts on their new phones," said spokeswoman Rochelle Cohen, without specifying the number.

Cohen said the quality of service on Cingular's GSM network is better than on its TDMA and analog networks.

It is planning to shut down its TDMA network in early 2008 and under Federal Communications Commission rules it must keep its analog network in place until February 2008, Cohen said.

I wonder how long it will be till other carriers follow suit.

i love cingluar.
i have service where most of my verizon friends dont. its rare i dont have service.
plus, so many people have it... mobile to mobile is great.

only time i ever have problems with it is on mardi gras, where everyones talking on their phones, and because the network is so big, no one with cingular gets service.

Most of the other carriers will not have to do this. Cingular...AT&T and maybe Nextel are the only major carriers that still use TDMA (or a variant of it). If you have Sprint, Verizon or T-Mobile, their networks are already the more advanced GSM or CDMA. I am not sure about Altel though.

i guess it depends on your state and their number of towers and shit, because i've heard nothing but bad shit about verizon around here, my sisters plan sucks, she never gets service, dropped calls and so on.
I'm overjoyed with my cingular, i have been for a few years, except for when i'm at my parents house, which is a dead zone, but as soon as i step on their front stoop i get a full signal, like everywhere else i go.
...Except for in the middle of the Sports Authority. which was where i was today running errands for my sister. damn you warehouse-sized store.

Verizon may cost slightly more, but the service is great. I never have had any issues. My phone worked on vacation in the bahamas, canada, etc...

Cingular has been fairly good for me so far. I get service pretty much anywhere, and they give 21% off for me being a federal employee (all carriers do this, but Cingular is one of the highest). Their customer service people eat balls though.

Really? I liked Nextel the best, and I even work and still use Sprint.

Basically it comes down to this. The cell phone company that works in your place of residence is the best for you.

We use Nextel for our government cell phones. Amazingly, they work everywhere except on base. I get shitty reception almost as soon as I get through the gates.

I use a nextel for work and I can't stand it. It's featurelss ( well it is a work phone) and the 2 way radio goes out if you try to have more than a five minute conversation on it.

im sure there are other cell threads, but ive got a question and decided to put it here.
ive had my cell for about 7 months or so, and yesterday the flippy part starts making a little pop noise when i close it, and wont stay open for anything.
so im bringing it in to cingular today to try and get a new one.
any thoughts on how i should approach the situation?

They will most likely replace your phone if they can't fix it, shouldn't be a big hassle
