The Drink from Euro Trip

For fuck's sake....I just looked at the prices.

I paid about 90 koruns ($3 US) for the bottle I have at home.

oh... sorry, from what i read in maxim... it was around $30 bucks for the bottle itself plus another maybe $20 for shipping.... I was wrong i suppose

The bottles in the absinth.com shop are insane....

One bottle is $209.90, another is $149.90. That's for 1 litre, not counting shipping. Fuck all that.

I could see paying 30 or 40 bucks just to try it, but I wouldn' t spend any more than that. It's really not that big a deal.

Yea that Absinth puts all others to shame it should be legal in the states. I have heard some wild stories about what people do when they drink that stuff up. And it is so incredibly strong.

The reasons its illeagel is cause if u drink to much of it it eats holes in your brain!! It is good stuff and if u buy the right stuff (Czech Republic) it will mess you up off of like 7 shots, and i was once branded an alchoholic by my friends! The stuff they had in maxim was the cheap imitation crap. They call it the green fairy. You can drink it a number of different way but the more poplar way is to heat it up and pour it over a sugar cube or just crush sugar and stir it into cold absynth!

Everything that has been stated here is true. It is made from wormwood and therefore offers helucinegenic properties. The thing is that each country in Europe allows a different strenghth. You have to go to certain countries to get the full affect. It is legal in the U.S. but only in a liquor form. Therefore the stuff here in the US is very strong but that is it. The best stuff is in Amsterdam, and let me tell you it is great. In Lonodon it is legal but you are only allowed two drinks of it. They stamp your hand to make sure, but it is only really strong liquor.

Well this isn't exactly true. The chemical that gives the effect is called thujone, there is an EU standard which states that the max thujone content is 10mg/kg. In alcohol's labeled 'bitters' or 'amer' in french, the thujone can be up to 35mg/kg. It is illegal to sell absinthe in the U.S. but it is perfectly legal to have it for your own personal consumption. Purchasing it oversea's or bringing it home from Europe is pretty much the only way you can get your hands on it. Most absinthes have an alcohol level of around 70 percent (the lowest I've found was 45%).

There are 2-3 ways of mixing and drinking absinthe: the Czech way, the French way, and straight up.
The czech way involves placing a sugar cube on an absinthe spoon (on a glass) and pouring the absinthe over the cube. You then light the cube on fire and let it carmelize and melt into the drink.
Using the French technique, you pour your about 1 shot of absinthe into a glass, then set the sugarcube on the spoon. You then pour ice cold water (about a 3:1 ratio with most absinthes) over the sugar cube as it desolves into your drink.
Keep in mind that most sugar cubes are too compact for the czech method and it's best if you have the cubes that are designed for absinthe.

personally i wasn't impressed with it but it tastes quite nice!

as previously stated half the ones they sell arent true absinhe but just imitations, the hallucinating ones are illegal in england too!

oh and zubrovka vodka is gorgeous and only works with apple juice...u can buy it in any pub in england these days!

i personally don't see the big deal about it... my friend brought some home from Italy and it was ok, but it didn't make me hallucinate. People make it seem like it's the greatest stuff on earth, but it's really not. However, if you are going to buy some, don't do it over the internet because it's not the real thing.

I've had it before. I was kind of disappointed. It didn't even give me much of a buzz, but maybe I had bad stuff without too much thujone, regardless it really killed the mystique for me.

If we legalized it I'm sure it would be a lot less cool.

I've had it, my brother imported it from europe. It's extremely strong...i didn't feel anything special except i was really drunk...thats about it
