i went to a psychologist because i cant focus for beans, and he told me i have ADD. he wrote me a letter to take to the dr. saying that i'm add and to put me on adderall because he had heard that strattera was crap. i had to go to 3 different doctors before they would put me on adderall; the first two tried to put me on strattera because adderall is a controlled substance, but i didnt want to try that first if it might not work as well.

are any of yall on adderall or strattera or know if strattera even works?

anyone thats on adderall- does it make you irritable because the psychologist said it might do that which worries me because im already an irritable bitch half the time

Now just a thought but these drugs are for the same thing right... Some doctors don't use certain medicines because the name. My phyc teacher is always taking about how ritilan has like 12 diffrent names and its all the same damn thing. So when parents say they don't want their kids on ritilan they give them one of the generic names for it and the kid is still on ritilan. Ya gotta research your drugs to get the whole truth.

Stick with beer.. I had a friend who had to take adderal and he decided to drink afterwords and we thought he was going to die, he was barfing and passing out but it was way worse than just being drunk... so DO NOT drink with it!

I'm just a little curious that nobody caught your ADD beforehand. Did the psychologist show you the results that made him determine that you had ADD? If you can try a different one, cause if you've gotten this far without a presciption try to keep that streak going. What can and what can't you concentrate on? Adderal wow don't mix with alcohol cause it doubles the effect of alcohol . People with ADD can get addicted to it and yes it makes you REALLY irritable.
So to wrap this up, if you enjoy drinking don't take adderal and consult another psychologist or at least ask to see the results of the test he performed on you. I don't know anything about the other drug so can't help you out there.
Oh and what's up with the doctor saying that he heard that stattera was crap? That doesn't sound that professional to me at all. Sounds like he heard it from the water cooler or something. If you can consult a different psycholgist.

P.S. I'm not a psychologist yet but I do have a couch you can lay down on. tongue.gif wink.gif j/k

yeah i had never had problems with concentration until about 10th grade- i noticed it then, but i didnt really care enough to get medicine for it. the reason it has become a problem now is because im starting pre-med courses and i cant get by just bullshitting anymore. the psychologist said that was common for smart kids to get through school on brains, without ever having to really study- which is me. i never studied in high school and always had good grades, but now i cant study because, according to him, i have add.

P.S. i have my own couch to lie on... but thanks anyway

i am the exact same way. Throughout high school i never had to study for a test. if the teacher was good and interesting(which is like 1 out of 10) i was good to go. even if they sucked i was alright. then i just quit giving a shit as a senior and carrried my hoodie to every class for pillow.

most of those add drugs are about the same. some seem to have different side effects. but usually if your naturally hyper they bring you down, and if your too mellow they'll bring you up to speed. but hey if you get adderall and dont like it then just send it my way. I'll put it to good use. drink.gif

I was a little hyper bastard, so I was diagnosed as ADD when I was in like 4th grade. I had to take Ritalin throughout all of elementary school. I quit when I started high school, but started again for college, because I couldn't even read a book, and couldn't pay attention in class. After I started back on it, my grades went from C's and D's to A's and B's. I never should have gone off of it, since my grades were always worse, but being the hyper kid in class who had to take "hyper pills" and getting made fun of for it by other little kids made me always want to try to do without it. I haven't taken it since college, but I've thought about taking it again, since I have a hard time working sometimes, and still have a lot of trouble concentrating on reading.

ADD is a cop-out diagnosis for a lot of kids nowadays. When I was a camp counselor, quite often HALF of the 10 kids in my cabin were on Ritalin. I'm convinced that people just use it to stifle annoying, goofy or even free thinking kids who just want to be themselves. There's no way half of kids need Ritalin.

As far as high school and college go, you definitely know if you have ADD. It isn't a matter of going to a different Psychologist. It's like someone is constantly changing the channel in your mind. It is almost impossible to pay attention in class, you can barely read because you keep thinking about other shit- quite often you read an entire page and then realize that you have no idea what you just read. You also retain very little, even if you WERE paying attention.

You may want to go to a Psychiatrist though. A Psychologist is more of a therapist, in that they can't prescribe drugs, and they aren't doctors. While he may have HEARD one drug was bad, a Psychiatrist would be able to tell you for sure, and what he/she recommends.

There is a website to check out. http://www.adultadd.com/index.jsp
They have a lot of information, and even a test for ADD that you can take yourself.

With pretty much all of the drugs available, there are side effects-including the dreaded "sexual side effects," (Men can't get hard, and Women's downstairs have the sensitivity of leather) but it doesn't happen in all people.

The behavior modification treatment is pretty much bullshit. I tried to read a book about how to control ADD without drugs, and I couldn't get through it enough to figure out what the hell it was talking about. Behavior modification to control ADD works about as well as when gay people go to those religious camps to get "reprogrammed" so they aren't gay anymore.

If the ADD is affecting your life that much, get the drugs, then deal with the side effects and decide if they're bad enough to stop taking the drug, or switching to another. The drugs are well worth it, and the difference in your concentration ability is day and night.

I'm also very easily distracted, and I've always had trouble focusing on anything for more than a few minutes at a time. In fact . . .

I really would like a beer right now. I think I'll go to the fridge and get one.

Goddammit. There's nothing good on TV tonight.

Pardon my sudden burst of insensitivity, but like Chris Rock said, "What ever happened to being crazy? You can't be crazy anymore? Did they throw crazy out of the dictionary?"
